SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -
Some Shreveport parents are left stunned to know their children might not be safe from sexual predators at school.
A Fair Park High School teacher's aid was arrested on charges of sexual battery against a student Friday. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
According to Shreveport Police, the arrest of 60-year-old Bobby Jelks Friday morning was the result of an investigation into allegations that Jelks had inappropriately touched a female student.
Jelks has been placed on administrative leave without pay by the Caddo Public Schools' personnel department pending an investigation, schools spokesman Victor Mainiero said.
"I'm speechless," said parent Tone Campbell.
He said this incident will make him talk to his daughter about what do if anything inappropriate happens to her.
"Let me know if there is anything going on that I need to know about," he said.
Officers were called to the school just after 9 a.m., where it was reported that a male paraprofessional worker assigned to the school had allegedly fondled and groped a 17-year-old student at various times during the previous school day.
Police think the inappropriate behavior may have occurred over a period of time spanning a several weeks.
Detectives were able to gather evidence linking Bobby Jelks to the allegations. Jelks was detained on campus at the school and later arrested for his alleged involvement in the crime.
"You can't judge a book by its cover, because he was such a nice man," said parent Angela Williams, who said she has known Jelks for five years.
According to the school district, he has been with Caddo Parish Schools for 16 years.
Following his arrest, Jelks was taken to the Shreveport City Jail, where he was booked on a single charge of sexual battery. The investigation into the matter remains underway.
