BOSSIER CITY, LA (KSLA) -

Leaders from across Bossier Parish plan to work together to try and improve the area's "curb appeal" by picking up trash all month long.

This initiative, rolled out Wednesday, is called "Operation Clean Sweep." It is meant to foster pride in Bossier communities and help stem crime in the process.

"We do it every day," said Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington. "We thought it'd be a good opportunity to pool our resources and everybody at one time, to really jump in and make a noticeable difference in the cleanliness of Bossier."

Whittington said his deputies can't do it all by themselves, though. They also want the community to pitch in and help clean up their own neighborhoods.

"I do think the city needs to be cleaned up some," said Bossier City resident Paulette Postell, adding that she is a strong believer in keeping the community clean. "I think everyone needs to be involved," she said.

Postell is already doing what the leaders are encouraging. Once a month, she and a team of people from the Stonewall Baptist Church pick up trash throughout the city.

"We think it's very important," Postell said. "we take a lot of pride in cleaning up our city."

Her attitude is exactly what Whittington hopes will catch on.

"Hopefully we can get it clean, keep it clean, and never have to do this again, but we're realistic," he said.

The goal of the "Operation Clean Sweep" is to have the parish looking significantly cleaner by the time the Barksdale Air Show comes to town at the end of April.

Parish leaders say everyone is invited to a cleanup day at 8 a.m. on April 12 at the Viking Drive Substation.
