SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The victim in a rape case involving a former Shreveport city official has died in a car crash.

According to her attorney Joel Pearce, 21-year-old Kaitlyn Winstel died Sunday night in a wreck in Jacksonville, Florida.

Winstel was represented by Pearce after she was raped by former Chief Administrative Officer Rick Seaton at Government Plaza back in 2010.

First Coast News in Florida reports that investigators are awaiting test results to determine whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the fatal crash.

Seaton was convicted of raping Winstel in 2012. He was sentenced to 18 years in prison. "It's a devastating loss; she never recovered from the rape that was inflicted upon her in the mayor's office by Rick Seaton. In fact, Rick Seaton added injury upon injury by suing Kaitlin for defamation in federal court" Joel Pearce says.

Winstel filed civil suit against Seaton following his criminal conviction, and Seaton was suing Winstel for defamation. Attorney Joel Pearce says both suits will most likely be dropped: "I'm sure that the case is over since she is dead. But it makes me very very angry thinking here is this man sitting in jail, lobbing grenades at this innocent young girl and that he'll probably feel some kind of satisfaction that she's dead and reason to himself that god caused this to happen."
