LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Bourbon sampling determined which barrel boats would serve on board as they compete in the 2014 Great Steamboat Race.

Friday representatives of the Kentucky Derby Festival, the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati participated in the tasting as the tasks and scoring system that will determine the winner of the Ohio River race between the Belles was announced.

Instead of racing to cross the finish line first, crews on the Belle of Louisville and the Belle of Cincinnati will have to complete the following 10 tasks:

  • Task No. 1: Jousting inflatable competition
  • Task No. 2: Obstacle inflatable course
  • Task No. 3: Handy line toss
  • Task No. 4: Monkey fist toss
  • Task No. 5: Miniature Paddle Wheel Assembly
  • Task No. 6: Calliope contest
  • Task No. 7: Buoy flag retrieval
  • Task No. 8: VIP retrieval
  • Task No. 9: Bourbon barrel retrieval
  • Task No. 10: Boat race finish

Officials said not completing a task would result in a 35 point penalty. In addition to the 10 tasks passengers will have the opportunity to sample and vote for their favorite bourbon. The Belle with the most votes will be awarded a mint julep trophy.

The 2014 Great Steamboat Race start at 6 p.m. on April 30. For more information, click here.
