What started out as a fishing trip turned into a tragic loss of life Thursday morning in an East Texas reservoir.
Ronald Clegg, 63 of Bronson and Kenneth White, 49 of Pineland were trot line fishing on the Toledo Bend Reservoir when their boat capsized, dumping the men into the water near the Ragtown Recreational Area, police said.
The boat apparently got caught on a stump and flipped over into the choppy water. The waves had been swelling to 3-and-one-half feet, police said.
White managed to swim to shore to get help while Clegg was trying to cling to the boat and wait for help to arrive, said Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell. The call came in around 12:30 p.m. and Clegg's body was found close to an hour later.
"It was a fishing trip that turned into a drowning. No foul play is suspected," Blackwell said, adding that both men were wearing life jackets.
He said it's possible that Clegg died from exposure to the 55-degree-water and then drowned.
