AUSTIN, TX -

Northwestern State's Brent Giddens ran his best 400 meter hurdles time Thusday at the 87th Annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, while Lady Demon senior Consuela Lindsay had a strong performance knocked off stride but still finished 16th among 63 competitors in the women's 400 hurdles.

Results of the first day of the Bobcat Invitational at nearby Texas State were incomplete from the host school Thursday evening. In the women's discus, NSU's Shakemia Johnson threw 153-9 for seventh place while teammate Rechelle Bessard posted a 146-4 mark and placed 12th. The hepathlon first-day results involving Mawi Berkhadley were unavailable.

At Austin, Giddens, a junior whose specialty is the 110 hurdles, ran a 55.42 time Thursday in the 400 hurdles, 49th among 60 contestants.

Lindsay, a senior, was running "extremely well" on pace to threaten her school record when a competitor in the next lane stumbled over a hurdle and altered Lindsay's stride. From there, the NSU standout came in with a 1:00.59 time, still good enough for 16th place.

"Coach (Chad) Leath thought Consuela was on her way to a great time but when she got knocked off stride when the other runner stumbled and she couldn't get back to running her race," said head coach Mike Heimerman. "But seeing her on pace for a sub-59 time was great. She might have had a shot at her school record (58.64) with most of the season to go. It's in there, no doubt."

A heavier slate of Northwestern athletes compete Friday in Austin and San Marcos.
