A 25-year-old Heflin man has died after he was struck by two vehicles while he was lying in the roadway.
Louisiana State Police say Zachary Malham was killed after being struck in the northbound lane of US 371 about three and half miles north of Ringgold.
Troopers say Doyle hit her brakes and swerved, but was unable to avoid hitting Malham. A second vehicle driven by 23-year-old Tedderick Williams, of Heflin, also struck Malham.
Malham was pronounce dead on the scene by the Bienville Parish Coroner's Office. Troopers suspect Malham was impaired and that was a factor in the crash. No charges have been filed against Doyle and Williams.
Toxicology samples from Malham and both drivers will be submitted for analysis. Troopers say walking in the travel lanes of a highway, especially at night while impaired, is dangerous and should be avoided.
Nearly 70 percent of pedestrian fatalities occur at night, according to Troopers. They advise pedestrians to wear light colored clothing, reflective materials, and to carry a flashlight at night.
