SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The City of Shreveport celebrated its 175th birthday with a reception at Government Plaza, and remarks from Mayor Cedric Glover.

"It's one of those things you want to stop and have a chance to be able to share the history of Shreveport," Glover said. "The history of Shreveport is such an important part of not only the history of Louisiana, but certainly of this region."

Shreveport, Louisiana was founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, a development corporation established to start a town at the meeting point of the Red River and the Texas Trail.

The Red River was cleared and made newly navigable by Captain Henry Miller Shreve, who commanded the United States Army Corps of Engineers. A 180-mile-long natural logjam, the Great Raft, had previously obstructed passage to shipping. Shreve used his specially-modified riverboat, the Heliopolis, to remove the logjam. The company and the village of Shreve Town were named in Shreve's honor.

The milestone was commemorated with a big birthday cake decorated with the city's seal.

Shreveport began as the village of Shreve Town incorporated on March 20, 1839. The town became a city in 1871.

Thursday's event took place in the lobby with the public in attendance. Mayor Glover talked about the city's history and its future.
