Boy brings 3 folding knives to Chesterfield middle school

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

A 12-year-old Chesterfield boy is facing charges after police report he came to Falling Creek Middle School with three knives. Police say he didn't pull the knife on anyone, Monday morning. No one was hurt.

However, bringing a weapon to school in Chesterfield means more than backlash from the principal. It's against the law, and authorities will be called in.

One of the folding, pocket knives is described as having a 3.25 inch blade. Officers say the other two blades were shorter.

Another student spotted the boy with a knife, and immediately alerted a teacher. The student is facing a charge of having possession of a weapon on school property.

"They like to be cool. They like to play with their friends. They like to show and tell. And that's all it is," said parent Ellen Taylor, who guesses the boy's intentions were likely not malicious.

Even if the boy's incentive was just to show his friends a cool-looking knife, he now might face a judge, in addition to the principal.

"There is a time and place for everything. So, whether it's a gun, a knife, or a cap gun, schools are just not the place to bring weapons," said Brandon Eason, a soon-to-be father.

A Chesterfield schools spokesperson released this statement, which reads in part:

"We take very seriously our responsibility to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that is free from disruption. Students who violate student conduct regulations are subject to suspension and/or expulsion, and, if the offense is a violation of the law, to prosecution."

Chesterfield school heads say they're not allowed to comment on what discipline the student might face without permission from parents.
