EBR Sheriff's inspection program aims to prevent car burglaries

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Leaving precious valuables like cell phones and purses in your car screams for a thief to come by and swipe them. But now the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office is taking steps to help you  avoid that problem. It's called the vehicle inspection test.

"This is a great way to get the word out to let people know that there are simple steps that you can take to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of a crime," said Casey Hicks,  spokeswoman for the Sheriff's office.

Hicks said there are nearly 2,000 car burglaries that happen each year in East Baton Rouge Parish. In 90 percent of those cases, the car doors were unlocked.

Hicks explained deputies will be randomly inspecting vehicles in parking lots and elsewhere, from the outside only, to see if your car is susceptible to a burglary. You will receive a pamphlet- with a pass or fail on your windshield.

People around the Baton Rouge area had some mixed feelings about the new initiative.

"If people get a piece of paper saying they would've been robbed I think it would make them think that they shouldn't do that. It would be a kick starter to not doing it," said a motorist.

"I think it's interesting. It may deter people from robbing cars. I personally don't like the idea of police officers snooping around anyone's car, but I understand why they are doing it," said another.
