FROM LA TECH SPORTS:

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Tommy McClelland announced Saturday night that Lady Techster head basketball coach Teresa Weatherspoon has been relieved of her duties effective immediately.

Weatherspoon was hired in the summer of 2008 as the associate head coach under then head coach Chris Long. She took over the reins of the program the following February as interim head coach and was then named head coach on April 2, 2009.

During her six years on the LA Tech sideline, Weatherspoon recorded a mark of 99-71, which included a 12-20 record this season. Weatherspoon led the Lady Techsters to a pair of NCAA Tournaments (2010, 2011) but the past two seasons saw the program record their first two losing seasons in program history.

"This decision was very difficult to make and was not made without careful consideration of all the facts and implications," McClelland said. "We are grateful for the loyal and dedicated service Teresa has given to the program during her tenure. She is a big part of the lore of this storied program, and her accomplishments as a Louisiana Tech player and coach will always be remembered."

As a player at Louisiana Tech, Weatherspoon helped lead legendary head coach Leon Barmore's team to the 1988 NCAA Division I national title. She was named the Wade Trophy winner as the nation's top collegiate player as a senior.

"Lady Techster basketball has a great tradition and a tremendous national reputation," McClelland said. "The measuring stick for success in women's basketball at Louisiana Tech is higher than most programs around the country. The University is committed to reviving the competitiveness of the Lady Techsters."

McClelland said that a national search for Weatherspoon's successor will begin immediately but that no timetable has been established for hiring her replacement.
