Baseball headlines Biloxi's State of the City

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Biloxi Mayor A.J.Holloway stepped up to the microphone with a full house at Beau Rivage waiting to hear the mayor's State of the City Address. Holloway put on a Biloxi Baseball cap and started with the biggest story in the city: baseball. The plan to build a stadium across from Beau Rivage and bring a minor league team to the coast was at the top of the Mayor's agenda.

"The big thing is baseball. It's going to be great for the city and the entire Gulf Coast," said the Mayor.

Holloway then hit economic issues, like development around the city. He pointed out that sales tax revenues are up almost seven percent since October. He also talked about a flurry of activity in the casino sector with gaming properties expanding.

Mayor Holloway targeted east Biloxi, ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, as a part of town in need of attention. He referred to this as "The Year of The Point," with Biloxi Waterfront Park and the Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum taking shape.

"It's a beautiful building. It'll be a great asset," Holloway said.

Biloxi plans to spend $335 million on infrastructure in the form of roadwork and other projects. But it was clear: The building of the stadium and the arrival of double AA baseball is the most exciting development in the city.

That sentiment was echoed by former major leaguer and baseball booster Barry Lyons.

"It's great for Biloxi. I'm looking forward to seeing the stadium come out of the ground," Lyons said.

The mayor also talked about the Biloxi School District and the importance of Keesler Air Force Base.
