NATCHITOCHES – After C.J. Webster broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning in favor of the Northwestern State baseball team, but McNeese State answered with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth innings to get past the Demons 6-2 Sunday afternoon at Brown-Stroud Field in non-conference action.
Webster lined a ball into the right field gap that allowed Bret Underwood to score the go-ahead run in the seventh inning of a game that was tied since the third frame. Underwood reached on a single to left field and advanced to second base on an error. Northwestern State fell to 7-8 with the loss.
McNeese State (10-5) answered in the eighth inning on a single to right field from Clay Payne that scored Chayse Marion and Jackson Gooch. Gooch was walked on five pitches and Marion was hit by a pitch with a 0-2 count.
The Cowboys added three more in the top of the ninth inning. Matt Williams had a one-run double to left field. Two batters later, Reed Gordy took a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, and Payne reached on a fielder's choice to score Gooch.
"It wasn't a good day offensively for anybody. They didn't really start swinging at it until we had to get deep into our bullpen," said head coach Lane Burroughs. "It was had a lot to do with it being the fifth game in four days. I know I keep saying that, but ultimately it was.
"We had a lot of guys who threw multiple days. Our guys competed and we're in a storm right now and we're going to weather it."
The Demons scored first in the opening inning when Chase Daughdrill singled through the right side to score Joel Atkinson. Edwin Gomez led off the inning with a single to right field, but was picked off after Joel Atkinson was hit by a pitch.
The score remained 1-0 until the third inning when Andrew Guillotte singled to left field and scored on a double to right field from Williams.
Brandon Smith started the game for Northwestern State, and pitched three innings and allowed one run on two hits. He struck out four in the game. Andrew Adams worked two innings and allowed one runner after a walk.
Josh Oller and Joey Parrack combined to pitch in the sixth inning. Oller allowed two hits and Parrack allowed a walk and struck out one. Steven Spann (2-3) took the loss on 1.2 innings pitched. He allowed six runs on two this and three walks.
Cole Prejean (1-0) grabbed the win on four innings of relief with two hits and one run.
Daughdrill was 1-for-2 with two walks and a RBI. Joel Atkinson also drew two walks and was 0-for-1 with a run scored. Webster had one hit in two tries with a run knocked in on the day.
"There is a lot of season left and I feel like we have a good club. We have guys on this team that have bought in and want to be here. They are tough and we hope all of that starts to show up this weekend," said Burroughs.
Northwestern State will open Southland Conference play next at Oral Roberts on Friday at 6:30.
