Memphis police officer in critical condition after being hit by a drunk driver

(WMC-TV) - A man is behind bars for crushing an Memphis police officer between a car while allegedly driving drunk.

It all started Saturday night at Poplar Avenue and Willett Street during a routine traffic stop, but in the blink of an eye it changed several lives.

Blue police lights lit up Poplar and Willett Saturday evening; Julie Montgomery was inside her Midtown apartment when the crash happened.

"I just saw all these lights. There must have been 10-15 cop cars. Poplar was blocked off," said Montgomery. "Two car doors were open, some guys were talking on cell phones. I did see a woman."

The woman was Officer Katrina Cobb, who was making a traffic stop on Poplar when the driver of a black Jeep got out of the car to retrieve her purse from the trunk.

According to a police affidavit, that is when 28-year-old Ismeal Vincente hit the parked squad car, pinning Cobb between the Jeep and her car.

"I saw the car was over there, rammed up against eh sidewalk," added Montgomery.

Police say when they arrived, Vincent had blood shot eyes, slurred speech and his breath smelled of alcohol. They also found empty beer cans and one cold can that was half empty.

Officer Cobb was taken to The MED in critical condition and the driver of Jeep taken to Methodist Hospital in non-critical condition. He has since been released.

In an update posted to her Facebook page Sunday evening, Cobb assured well-wishers that she was ok.

"Thank god for all my brothers and sisters for the calls and text. I am bruised and swollen and got some torn tissue in my spine and take that over not being here to work with u guys. God bless and thanks again!"

Vincente taken to the Union Precinct for a mandatory blood draw before he was booked into 201 Poplar.

Vincente is charged with DUI, open container, reckless driving, driving without a license and without insurance and remains in jail without bond.
