SFD: Family can return home after small house fire

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A family is waiting to return to their home after a house fire in the Sunset Acres neighborhood Thursday morning.

Fire investigators say the house was only partly damaged and is habitable, but Donna Jackson who lived in the house with her six kids says she can't return because two of her kids suffer from asthma.

"My back is basically up against the wall because everything we have is pretty much ruined," said Jackson.

Shreveport firefighters say it happened just before 2 a.m. at a home in the 7100 block of Gregory Street. Firefighters say the family was able to get out of the home without any injuries.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about five minutes and were able to contain the fire and much of the damage to the utility room.

But Jackson says smoke and water have damaged many of her children's clothes.

"I lost mostly everything. Some stuff I tried to salvage and my youngest baby's clothes, that's all gone," said Jackson.

Fire officials say the house has minor fire damage but the family will be able to return back inside after an investigator determines it is safe.

Jackson says she and her kids will stay in a hotel that was made available through the Red Cross.

Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
