DURHAM, N.C. -

Northwestern Mutual presented a $100,000 research grant to child cancer researchers at Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Wednesday through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

The Duke Children's Hospital and Health Center in Durham and UNC's School of Nursing will each receive $50,000 to fund a nurse researcher investigating the quality of care and life for children with cancer.

Researchers at UNC will use it to start a study into how nursing could help children with cancer who also have cardiovascular disease.

Researchers say cardiovascular disease is the leading, non-cancer cause of death in children  with cancer.

The donated money will help nursing faculty members devote time to the project, provide a stipend for children helping with the research and help pay for lab tests.

"We've been talking about collaborating on a cardiovascular project related to childhood cancer for a long time, so this is a great opportunity for us to make that dream and that vision come to life," said Sheila Santacroce, an associate professor at UNC. "And the other thought was, 'Oh my gosh, we better get going because this is a lot of work.'"

Santacroce says by having faculty members dedicated to the research, their nursing students are brought into the process and as a result may consider research as a career.
