Family, friends celebrate birthday of Shreveport man killed last year

Buford "Dede" Johnson would be 21 years old on March 3, if he hadn't been gunned down while walking down his street. On Monday, his family and friends gathered together for a balloon release to wish him a happy birthday at the spot where Johnson was shot.

Johnson was shot on May 16, 2013 in the 300 block of West 77th street. He was pronounced dead at University Health. Frederick Gipson is being charged with second degree murder in the case.

Since losing Johnson, his family has taken up the cause to speak out against neighborhood gun violence.  "Put an end to the violence, the gun violence, we all need to come together and stand in unity for one another," said Johnson's sister, Eisha Madison.
In honor of her son, Sadie Johnson has gone to every court date of her son's accused killer Frederick Gipson. "I want to be there for my son, and let him know I love him and I want justice," said Johnson, but lately she's felt frustrated after the last three court dates have been pushed back. The court dates have been continued because the defense attorney has asked for more time to look through evidence, according to Assistant District Attorney Bill Edwards.

"Every time I go [to the courthouse] and leave, I cry," Johnson said, but admits she understands the justice system can be slow, but says she doesn't want to wait years for a trial to happen. "I don't want to wait that long, for us to have justice," she said.

The next court date scheduled for Gipson is April 23rd at 2 p.m.
