GILLIAM, LA (KSLA) -

A Monday morning fire left two dead, and two attempted rescuers grieving in Gilliam, LA.

Shortly after 11 this morning, Michael Braton and his wife saw smoke and flames coming from their neighbor's mobile home, and quickly jumped into action. Braton's wife called 9-1-1 while he ran over to the house to check on the people inside. He says he saw 32 year-old Hannah Hawkins inside on the floor but still alive. "She was saying help me. Like a real faint help me, help me. I tried to grab her, but I just couldn't get her by myself," said Braton.

That's when another man, J.W. Christian, also attempted to get the woman out, "We went in and we dragged her to the door, and I tried to pull her over, but I couldn't get her. She was too heavy."

The flames quickly forced both men away from the mobile home, and they could only stand there and watch as fire fighters tried to put out the flames. "They were letting them know that they were in there. They didn't get her. I did all I could. I tried. I did my best to try to get them out. I just couldn't do it," said Christian.

Hannah Hawkins and her boyfriend 35 year-old Adonis Walker were found dead inside the home, once the fire was put out.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire started near the bedroom that the couple were asleep in, and was likely the cause of an electrical problem.
