SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A Shreveport man already behind bars on a raft of charges for theft and issuing worthless checks is now also accused of stealing the retirement savings of a mentally challenged neighbor.

42-year-old Terence Carthren of Shreveport was arrested Feb. 28 after police say he stole $35,750 in retirement funds from the 55-year-old neighbor after the victim asked Carthren to help withdraw money from a 401K account.

Carthren, who was already in custody at the Caddo Correctional Center on unrelated charges, allegedly had the victim's retirement check mailed to his address and deposited it into a Bank of America account he opened online. He also used the victim's personal information to open several new lines of credit, police say.

Carthren's previous arrests include more than 2 dozen counts of theft and 6 counts of issuing worthless checks. He is now also charged with identity theft and theft of assets of an aged or disabled person.
