Byrd's Campbell leads Yale in stunner over LSU 8-7

BATON ROUGE, LA (KSLA) -
Coming back to your home state when you've gone off to college, has to be sweet. Former C.E. Byrd baseball star and now Yale junior outfielder Green Campbell got to do just that on Sunday and made his return even sweeter by leading his team in a win over big bad LSU.

LSU had opened up a 6-0 lead after 4 innings before Yale scored 8 runs in the final 5 innings. Campbell went 2-3, scored 2 runs and had a game saving catch in the 8thinning, when Alex Bregman hit a promising shot towards left center, while Yale was ahead 8-7. With a man in scoring position, Campbell dove for the catch to end the inning and the threat.
About the gave saving catch, Campbell says, "I didn't think I was going to get there at first. God gave me some burst of speed and I made it there and it was just unbelievable, especially to have my whole team and family rooting for me. It was awesome."

Campbell scored the eventual game winning run in the top half of the 8thwhen Nate Adams hit a slow roller towards LSU pitcher Parker Bugg. But, Bugg's throw was off the mark. Tyler Moore couldn't come up with the catch at first, allowing Campbell to score from 3rd.

Campbell was a three-year letter winner at C.E. Byrd High School. He led the Jackets to playoff appearances in each of his three years on the team, including the state semifinals in 2009 and the state quarterfinals in 2011. He was the team captain in his senior season and earned a spot on the All-District Team and the Academic All-State composite team in 2011.
