PURVIS, MS (WDAM) -

Dozens of Purvis-area residents gathered Saturday morning to help a beloved former school district employee who suffered a debilitating injury while trying to help others last year. School district employees, students and other members of the community took part in the Superhero 5K Run for Terrod Jackson.

Jackson is a former Purvis Middle School computer technician who suffered brain damage after having a heart attack while participating in a benefit run for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

Organizers are trying to raise enough money to buy him a wheelchair lift.

Jackson also particiapted in the race, pushed along in his wheelchair by members of his Air National Guard unit.

"Terrod is a wonderful person," said Donna Sumrall, race organizer. "We're all hoping that we get to hear his laugh again, see his smile again, and hear that voice of his that could encourage everyone. He's got a long way to go, but he's got a lot of people supporting him," she said.

More than 200 people participated in the run. If you'd like to help Jackson, you can go to the Purvis Middle School Superhero 5K Facebook page.
