GILBERT, AZ (CBS5) -

Gilbert Fire Department hazmat crews on Thursday returned to the neighborhood where an explosion severely burned a landlord Feb. 9, but found no natural gas leak.

A Gilbert Fire Department spokesman said the crews returned about 11 a.m. after a new report of a natural gas odor in the neighborhood in the area of Warner and Val Vista roads.

Jason Nelson suffered burns over more than 80 percent of his body when he lit a cigarette in the garage of a rental house where one of his tenants lived. He was called to the house by the renter to investigate a natural gas odor.

The lighter ignited the explosion despite no natural gas source at the house.

Firefighters initially thought the source of the explosion was a pile of rags that contained paint-thinner fumes in the garage of the house at 1914 E Palomino Dr. about 4 p.m., according to Brian Ruffentine of the Gilbert Fire Department.

As many as 24 homes were ordered to evacuate while Southwest Gas investigated the source of the leak.

Southwest Gas found and capped at least one leak, and on Monday said the last three evacuated homes were ready for residents to return. The residents had been staying at hotels since the explosion.
