MARSHALL, TX (KSLA) -

Marshall police are investigating the discovery of a woman's body found late Saturday night lying off the roadway on Scotts Quarters Rd. near the intersection of Loop 390.

Police dispatchers got the call reporting the body just after 10 p.m. Officers, Marshal Fire and an ambulance were sent to the scene, where it was determined that the woman was dead.

Detectives and crime scene investigators were called in. The woman has been identified as 52-year-old Sharon Leonard of Marshall.  Leonard's niece, Danyell Leonard, says the family was shocked at the news of her aunt's death.  "Part of her body was in the road.  She only had one shoe on," Leonard said.

Leonard says investigators told the family that the cause of death could be natural.  They also told her that it appears as if her body had been placed there.  "Whoever dumped her there, at least had a little bit of conscience, cause they dumped her so close to home," Leonard said.

"Our little neighborhood is the family village, we help everybody, we're all suffering right now," Sharon's longtime friend Dorothy Franklin, along with other friends and family all came together, to remember Sharon and give support to the family.

"She would just want us to remember her smile, her helpfulness, that she was there to help out in whatever capacity she could," said Franklin.

Leonard explained to KSLA News 12 the family can't begin to heal, until they know exactly what happened to her. "Whoever did this, please let us know so we can get some closure," she said.

Her body has been sent for autopsy and investigators are asking that anyone who may have seen Leonard or know where she was before her body was discovered contact the Marshall Police Department at 903-935-4578 or Crimestoppers at 903-935-9969 if you wish to remain anonymous.
