Phone scam alert in Texarkana area

The Texarkana, Arkansas Police department wants to advise citizens about a phone scam circulating in the Texarkana area.

A senior citizen recently received a call from an unidentified male claiming to be her grandson.  That person advised the citizen that he was in an accident in Miami, Florida and that he had been arrested for DWI.  The suspect told her he needed $1,800.00 to be released from jail.  He said his attorney would be calling to make arrangements to send the money.

A second unknown male called claiming to be the victim's attorney.  He carefully explained how to wire the money from the MoneyGram store inside the Arkansas side Walmart.  She was instructed to wire the money to the an address in the Dominican Republic.

A few days later, the victim once again received a call from the individual claiming to be her grandson.  This time he stated he was staying at a hotel and that his attorney notified him that a total of $4,800.00 would be needed to settle the property and medical losses.

The victim completed two more wire transfers totaling $4,800.00.  The final transfers were sent to an address in Chile.

This type of scam is reported to police frequently and all reports have involved similar circumstances.  If you receive a suspicious phone call of anyone asking for money, please take the time to investigate thoroughly in order to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.

To protect yourself, conduct a basic investigation of your own by contacting several family members first hand to ensure the validity of the phone call.
