VIVIAN, LA (KSLA) -

A Vivian woman has been struck and killed by a train while crossing the tracks Thursday afternoon.

The woman has been identified as 50-year-old Brenda Martin. According to the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office, which is assisting Vivian Police, Martin was crossing the tracks at the pedestrian crossing in the 500 block of NE Front St. just before 3 p.m. when she was struck by a southbound KCS train.

The engineer told deputies that they saw her on the tracks and sounded the train's whistle, but the woman kept her head down and did not react.

The engineer was unable to stop in time.

The train, which was carrying coal, was traveling about 30 miles per hour and had 125 cars and four engines.
