NEW BOSTON, TX (KLTV/KSLA) -

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice says a small electrical fire started at around 9:30 Wednesday night at the State of Texas Telford Unit in New Boston.

They say smoke filled one of the prison's housing areas. Officials removed 42 inmates and placed them in a recreation yard.

"We had slight structural damage to the roof. We evacuated the offenders that were living in that area. We had medical check them," Major James Powers with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said.

There were no injuries, but officers and medical crews made sure the inmates did not suffer from smoke inhalation.

The New Boston Fire Department responded to the fire, which was quickly put out.

"The fire was extinguished before the fire department arrived. At that time, we just had them assist us to make sure we didn't have any hot spots still going on the roof," Powers said.

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice says the displaced inmates will be housed appropriately if they cannot return to their units.
