Opening statements in Pamela Phillips murder trial

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

Opening statements in the Pamela Phillips murder trial took much of the day Wednesday in Pima County Superior Court.

Phillips is accused of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the car bomb death of her ex-husband Gary Triano.

Triano died Nov. 1, 1996, in his car in the parking lot of La Paloma County Club.

The prosecution contends Phillips was the only one who had motive and the most to gain by Triano's death.

He had a $2 million life insurance policy.

The defense told jurors someone else killed Triano who was a Tucson businessman who owed a great deal of money to several people.

There are nearly 100 witnesses expected to testify.

The trial could last up to eight weeks.

The prosecution is not seeking the death penalty.
