TJC West campus adding $7.56 million energy center

Tyler Junior College broke ground today on their new Energy Center at the West Campus. The $7.56 million three-story building will be an addition to the skills training center.

TJC says this is being funded primarily through tax-increment financing and will provide a 51,000 square foot building to feature labs for heating, ventilation and air conditioning training, power plan technology, as well as more computers and classrooms.

The Energy Center will team up with the Luminant Academy that began in 2011. This expansion will add more space for hands-on work areas needed for electrical experience.

"I'm excited about this new addition to the program," sophomore Colton Sims said. "This will add more energy programs and more advanced classes."

Staff members say the addition will also help businesses in Tyler looking for skilled graduates who have been trained through the program.

More than 60 students are currently enrolled in the Luminant Academy and say this expansion will help them solve many energy emergencies in East Texas.

"There's only a couple programs like this is in the United States and I think it's great to have a more educated workforce," Sims said. "I think it will stop us from having so many blackouts because we'll know what to do with the equipment and how to treat it."

The Energy Center is expected to open in fall 2015.
