TYLER, TX (KLTV) - On Thursday, James Calvert was in court for a hearing in preparation for his capital murder trial. Calvert is accused of killing his ex-wife and kidnapping their son in 2012. He's being held in the Smith County Jail on a $25 million bond.

In the hearing, Calvert, who will represent himself at his trial, asked the court for permission to use a computer while in the Smith County Jail. Calvert said he needs the computer to view documents, videos and audio relating to his trial. The state argued that they could provide him copies of the necessary documents without using a computer.

Ultimately, the judge ruled the state would purchase a computer and printer as part of the trial cost, which will be used to create and review case files. The state's computer expert is required to make sure internet on the computer is disabled. The judge granted Calvert's request to prevent the state from having access to the computer.

The length of time Calvert gets to spend using the machine will depend on staffing at the jail.

Calvert's next pretrial hearing is next Thursday at 1:30 p.m.

On October 31, 2012, Tyler police swarmed a south Tyler home, just across the street from Pollard Park. Authorities say 30-year-old Jelena Sriraman was shot and killed when Calvert forced his way into that home and took their four-year-old son. An Amber Alert was issued and Louisiana police were able to stop Calvert and bring the child home.
