It's only February and the U-T Tyler women's basketball team has already made school history. It's ranked for the first time ever, but the Patriots continue to set other program records.
Being in the top 25 and one victory away from setting a new program record for wins in a season is right where this team thought it would be.
"It's very exciting, that's what it is," senior guard Danai Woods said. "I think we deserve it, and I think we should be here right now." Junior post Brittany King added, "From the first time we stepped on the court for practice, we knew we were going to be great and each day we got better and better, so it feels great to be on this team."
Being ranked can change a team's attitude and effort, but the Patriots are trying to not let the national attention get to their heads.
"I think we might be reading our press clippings a little bit too much," head coach Kevin Baker said. "I think that's natural. I think a team that has never been ranked sometimes has that happen to them." Senior post She'Cara Humphrey added, "He is not going to let us be complacent, and practice bad, because that's how we are going to play."
What UT-Tyler also has are scorers. At any given time, someone can step up and knock down a shot.
"We are a team full of weapons," Humphrey said. "We have a great point guard, we have great shooters, and post players so all that tied in together with our defense, we are unstoppable." Woods added, "We have a good coaching staff, a family oriented team so we just have weapons from all over so we are coming."
How far this team will go remains to be seen, but the bar has been set pretty high.
"We have a goal, and we are chasing history," Humphrey said. "We are not stopping and we are going to do what we have to do until we get there." Coach Baker finished by saying, "I think this team can go far, and I think this team can go into the NCAA tournament and do some damage."
With records already being broke, a few more could soon be shattered.
