Wintry precipitation moving into East Texas, even bringing thunder and lightning

(KLTV) - ***Winter Storm Warnings are now in effect for Panola, Shelby, San Augustine and Sabine Counties until 6 a.m. Wednesday. Later today, more significant amounts of ice are possible, causing driving conditions to become very difficult in some areas. Ice on trees, elevated surfaces and power lines could cause some power outages as well.***

***Winter Weather Advisories will be in effect for the central and eastern sections of East Texas until 6 a.m. Wednesday morning and for the western sections of East Texas until 6 p.m. Tuesday. ***

***Freezing Rain Advisories for Houston, Trinity and Polk Counties until midnight tonight***

Tuesday afternoon look for precipitation to continue to increase from the south and west as moisture develops with our next wave. This one should provide increasing chances for precipitation through the remainder of the day. Late Tuesday night, we should begin to see things clearing out of the area. Temperatures will once again fall below freezing so a few slick spots will be possible.

As the amount of ice increases across the area, within the atmosphere the static buildup is increasing as well. Sleet, much like hail, moves throughout the lower levels of the atmosphere, causing static electricity to build up and in some cases this afternoon, lightning and thunder.

The freezing rain is beginning to cause a thin layer of ice to form on many elevated surfaces over the northern half of East Texas, generally from Athens to Tyler to Longview and points north. With temperatures cooling down this afternoon, the ice line is likely to move farther and farther south. Please be careful out there as bridges and overpasses may begin to freeze later today and this evening.
