ANCHORAGE, AK (KTUU/CNN) - Frigid temperatures and snow may have the rest of the country hunkering down, but for competitors in 1,000-mile dog sled race in Alaska, it's perfect.
The Yukon Quest Race has been going on since 1984 with a course that runs along the Yukon River.
Competitors are called mushers and their goal is to lead their team of dogs on the thousand mile trek over 10 to 14 days.
Brent Sass was the first musher to reach an important checkpoint in the race, earning him a prize of four ounces of gold.
