CONVERSE, LA (KSLA) -

A young Converse man died Saturday night in a fiery wreck in northern Sabine Parish.

According to Sabine Parish Coroner Ron Rivers, it is believed that 19-year-old Cody James Meaux was headed east along La Hwy 174 on his way to a church youth group in Converse just after 9 p.m. when his 2007 Saturn went off the roadway to the right in a left-hand curve.

Based on observations at the scene, Meaux overcorrected and crossed both lanes before hitting a large tree head-on in the west-bound ditch, where the car burst into flames.

Rivers says the North Sabine Fire District had to use the Jaws of Life and multiple other tools to cut the roof off of the vehicle to remove the driver's door before Meaux could be pulled from the car. Due to the intense fire, identification was preliminary, based on personal items in the car and on Meaux.

Meaux's body has been sent for autopsy at University Health Shreveport. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by Louisiana State Police.
