Caddo School Board approves reconfiguration plan

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

A reconfiguration plan presented by new Superintendent Dr. Theodis Lamar Goree was approved by school board members in Tuesday's meeting.

The plan addresses 6 failing schools in the Parish and changes the district's focus to a different curriculum.

The plan will convert Fair Park and Woodlawn into traditional high schools. The students at these schools will attend Lakeshore Middle School and Caddo Middle career and technology schools.

The plan will also create a split configuration feeder pattern.

"If you give us some flexibility at the third grade level then when they take test in the 4th grade then they will do well," says School Board President Carl Pierson.

Pierson says this plan will allow for greater flexibility among grade levels and curriculum.

The plan will also create block scheduling for some elementary schools and expand magnet programs at Oak Park Elementary and Broadmoor.

A deadly virus is threatening the crawfish industry in Southwest Louisiana. It's called white spot syndrome virus and it was first discovered in Thailand, but somehow it made its way to ponds in South Louisiana and specialists are struggling to find the funds to research a solution.  “The catch was increasing and increasing and then it dropped 70% and that's when you saw the dead crawfish floating in the water,” said a crawfish farmer of 34 years, Ian Garbarino.
