TEXARKANA, TX (KSLA) -

A Texarkana man has admitted to setting the fire that destroyed an apartment building in December.

David Gray, 41, was charged with arson of a habitation following the fire at the apartment building in the 500 block of West 5th St. on December 23.

Texarkana Texas Fire Department responded to the apartment building fire around 2:00 p.m. and stayed on scene for six hours, according to TTFD Assistant Fire Chief and Fire Marshal Chris Black.

"This was a dangerous fire for the occupants of the building, as well as the firefighters," Black said.  "The design of the building, with only one exit from the second floor, along with strong winds, made this a difficult fire to control and extinguish. Fortunately, neither the occupants nor any firefighters were injured during the incident."

"Every fire is investigated for origin and cause," Black said. "If the fire is considered incendiary, we follow through with a complete investigation from initial scene search to conviction. We will prosecute anyone who intentionally sets a fire to the fullest extent of the law."

City officials now say Gray pled guilty to the felony charge on Thursday and was sentenced to 5 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.
