NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A lot of people are experiencing sticker shock when they open their electric bills this month due to the cold weather.

But some Nashville Electric Service customers might be in for an even bigger shock when they hear how much a renovation project at NES headquarters is costing them.

NES has completed a renovation of its downtown headquarters totaling nearly $1 million, and some NES customers say that just seems excessive.

The project includes a brand new board room and a new security station at the visitors' entrance.

"To see NES spending what has got to be a huge amount of money on this new board room and meeting room makes no sense," said taxpayer watchdog Ben Cunningham, with Tennessee Tax Revolt.

NES says for security and safety reasons, it made the decision to move the board room to the first floor because federal regulations require visitors to an electric utility be escorted, and the previous board room that was on the second floor beyond a security checkpoint made it difficult to manage the foot traffic.

"This is something that is kind of off the books for taxpayers. We see what goes on at the courthouse, but we don't watch NES as closely as we should, I think. They spend a huge amount of taxpayer money," Cunningham said.
