Krewe of Sobek parade this weekend


The Krewe of Sobek is kicking off Mardi Gras in Shreveport with the first parade of the season at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 18. 

Friday, January 17 the Krewe of Sobek will hold their Grande Bal XI "Sobek Under the Big Top" at the Shreveport Convention Center on Friday, January 17.

The Krewe has taken a circus-theme this year in their 11th year. The Grande Bal will feature stilt-walkers straight out of New Orleans and hosts dressed as circus animals. The parade will have clowns, jugglers and lots of music from local high school bands.

"This year it's all about the children," Publicity Chair Gloria Phillips said. For the first time, the children in the parade will be allowed at the Krewe's ball. And the parade will feature more throws geared toward the kids.

"I've got [toy] swords, alligators, sharks," Captain Michael Harris said.

The Krewe of Sobek parade will roll at 1p.m. Saturday, January 18 through Shreveport's Queensborough neighborhood.

The parade route will begin at the Fairgrounds fields' parking lot. After exiting the Fairgrounds, the parade continues west on Greenwood Road for one block. Make a right to travel north on Mertis Avenue to Lakeshore and make a right heading east. Then another right on Missouri heading south back to the Fairgrounds parking lot.

The Krewe of Sobek wants everyone to come on out to their parade Saturday and in costume for a fun time.
