Funeral services were held for former Bossier City Mayor George Dement Wednesday morning.
The popular 4-term mayor passed away Sunday morning at his farm in Frierson, La. after a lengthy illness. He would have turned 92 on January 23.
More than 200 turned out for the service, which took place at First Baptist Church Bossier City starting at 10:30 a.m. Several of Dement's oldest friends spoke at the service, remembering his genuine personality, faith and love for his family - especially the love he had for his late wife, Sunshine.
Dement's longtime friend Sonny Deprang, who served on the city council for 12 years during Dement's tenure said the former mayor loved Bossier City and the people who live there.
Following the service, the funeral procession left the parking lot in front of First Baptist Church and headed to the Evergreen Cemetery in Frierson.
The Bossier City Police Department joined by the Bossier Parish Sheriff's Office, Louisiana State Police and the DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office with escorting the procession.
After the ceremony, the Dement family will host a celebration for Mayor Dement's life at the Kingston Baptist Church in Kingston, Louisiana.
