SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

Caddo Parish schools have confirmed 2 cases of the H1N1 virus involving students at Cherokee Park Elementary School.

The students are sisters, in second and third grade.

School district spokesman Victor Mainiero says principal Tyrone Burton was notified Tuesday morning of the cases, and they are now taking precautionary measures are being taken to sanitize and prevent the spread of the flu to other students. About 450 students are enrolled at the school.

"I think some of the parents really kind of panicked, things are really good at Cherokee Park, of our population there [were] only two kids within the same household," said Burton.

Mainiero says the 2 students have been out of school since Thursday and Friday of last week, respectively. They have been cleared by their doctor to return to school on Friday, January 17, but school is out for a teachers' professional day. Since there is no school on Monday, either, because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday, the students will not return until Tuesday.

"And that's what I really want parents to understand is they haven't been here," said Burton.

Burton goes on to say precautionary measures were in place before these cases were confirmed, and that parents can and should continue to send their kids to school. "I want the parents of Cherokee Park to be relaxed and be calm."

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
