Cullen firefighters threaten to resign over appointment of new chief

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -

In a show of solidarity Thursday, most of the firefighters from Webster Parish District 6 threatened to resign after hearing a new fire chief has been appointed.

A group of firefighters showed up to the fire station ready to hand in equipment and resignation letters to the newly appointed Fire Chief Gary Sullivan.

According to Sullivan, he was appointed this past Tuesday by the district's fire board chairman.

Firefighters, along with the former Fire Chief Charles Hile, say they did not find out about the decision until Thursday, and they believe the move was done illegally and without consent from the fire board.

"I feel like it was done illegally because of the fact the board did not participate in it," says Fire Board Member Lawrence Williams.

During the meeting, Chief Sullivan walked out after being asked to leave by the ousted chief, who pointed out that he had not yet personally received notice of his removal.

"They appointed me as the chief and asked me to go take care of some things and I tried to do that but you can see the grief I have had," says Gary Sullivan.

The Fire Department is a volunteer fire department made up of 20 fire fighters. They serve roughly 5,000 people in the local area.

The issue is expected to be discussed at the next Fire Board meeting coming up on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
