6 families displaced in 2-alarm Highland apartment building blaze

A Highland neighborhood apartment building was destroyed in a 2-alarm blaze Thursday morning.

Assistant to the Fire Chief Fred Sanders says firefighters were called to The Country Care Apartments on the corner of Stoner Avenue and Gilbert Drive at 8:19 a.m. and arrived at 8:21.  Sanders says it took around 40 firefighters to battle more than an hour to battle the heavy flames and smoke. Additional manpower was called in at 8:28 a.m., and the fire was under control just under an hour later.

The early morning blaze burned through the roof with flames extending 25 feet above.  The fire affected multiple apartments and six families. Sanders says 1 juvenile occupant suffered minor cuts to the hand sustained while trying to alert other occupants.  He was treated on the scene.

According to Sanders, fire investigators determined that the fire originated in apartment #409-B.  The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, although the occupant told investigators that she was drying clothing using heat from the stove top.

Apartment management has relocated all but one of the families.  The local Red Cross has been notified and is providing assistance as needed.  To assist with helping these families, contact the local Red Cross at 318-865-9545.
