ArkLaTex organizations help homeless during cold weather

ArkLaTex organizations are stepping up to bring more homeless people in from the cold.

Representatives with the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission say they've seen an increase in people looking for shelter during this recent cold snap. "When there's a sustained cold and it stays cold for a long period of time, then we see a great influx especially when the temperatures are extreme. If it's really hot, it's not quite as bad as when it's really cold. I think we're acclimated around here to the heat better," says Director of Development and Community Relations D.J. Hejtmanek. Hejtmanek say they've put out about 20 extra cots and chairs. There's also been an increase in meal sizes.

The family suites are all full at the mission, but there are still some open spots on the women's side of the shelter.

The mission is in need of winter clothing to give to homeless people who come to the escape the cold. " This time of year we always need cold weather clothing. We need coats. We need hats and gloves, especially large gloves for men. And we need pillows and blankets," says Hejtmanek.

You can drop off donations at the Shreveport-Bossier Rescue Mission located at 901 McNeil Street in Downtown Shreveport.
