One dead after single-car crash in Texarkana, TX

Police have identified the man killed in a single-car crash in Texarkana, Texas early Tuesday morning.

Officials say it happened just after midnight on Jarvis Parkway (Loop 151) and Leopard Drive.

Officers were called to the location after the 911 communications center received a notification from OnStar Telematics Call Center that a collision had occurred there. They arrived to find a 2008 GMC pickup truck in the roadway on Leopard Dr.

45-year-old Benjamin Carl Hegwood of Ashdown, Arkansas was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Nancy Talley.

According to Sergeant Mike Harris, Hegwood was northbound on Loop 151 when his vehicle left the roadway and entered the median about 200 feet from the Leopard Drive overpass.  His vehicle then went airborne off the bridge's embankment before dropping to the roadway below. Hegwood's vehicle continued across Leopard Drive before striking the embankment on the other side of the roadway where it rolled over and came to rest on its wheels.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Hegwood's body was sent to Dallas for an autopsy. There were no other occupants in the vehicle at the time of the accident.  He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
