Donations bring ETX teacher shot in Honduras back to United States

DALLAS, TX (KLTV) -

An East Texas teacher who was shot in Honduras is finally back in Texas to receive the medical care he needs.

Last month, 27-year old Joseph French, a former KLTV employee and local artist, was gunned down on his way home from a school Christmas party. French had moved to Honduras to teach English at a local high school.

The medical flight to bring Joseph home cost thousands of dollars, and his family couldn't afford it on their own. However, East Texans answered their call for help, and Sunday morning Joseph was reunited with his family at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.

"I want to thank everyone who helped us with prayers and economically. This would not have been possible without your support," says Joseph's brother, David Ortega.

Ortega says seeing his little brother again was indescribable.

"I don't have any words do describe how I felt... at peace... happiness. He is alive and I know that God is going to finish what he started," says Ortega.

Joe has a long road of recovery ahead of him.

"He doesn't speak. He doesn't move his head either, but he somewhat follows you with his eyes. If you ask him, 'Joseph can you hear me?' he'll squeeze your hand a little bit," explains Ortega.

There are still a lot of tests to be done, and a lot that's not yet known about Joe's rehabilitation, but his family does know they'll be by his side and they'll have East Texans behind them.

Joe remained in ICU at Baylor Medical Center on Sunday night. His family says they will meet with a speech therapist on Monday.
