MOORINGSPORT, LA (KSLA) -

The Historic Caddo Lake Drawbridge is celebrating it's 100th anniversary in 2014 and is being featured in a popular southern travel magazine.

The Historic Caddo Lake Drawbridge 100th anniversary celebration will appear in the January/February issue of AAA Southern Travelers magazine.

The magazine circulates to more than 260,000 homes in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.  According to a release, more than 70% of their readers choose the south for their vacation destination.

"We're pleased to add the Historic Caddo Lake Drawbridge 100th anniversary celebration to the growing list of treasures in our area", said Michael Right, editor/publisher of AAA Southern Traveler.  "Our members recognize the south has endless travel and recreational opportunities.  We try to offer places like this to our readers to encourage more exploration of local sites and attractions."

Built in 1914, the vertical lift drawbridge crossing Caddo Lake in Mooringsport is one of the state's very earliest bridges.

A citizens campaign was launched in the 1980s to save the landmark.  That triggered the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development to conduct the first historic bridge survey.  It was determined that the bridge is significant nationally due to the designer, the unique design and the fact that it is the sole surviving example of this type of bridge in the state of Louisiana.

The bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.  It is currently maintained by the Caddo Parish Department of Parks and Recreation.  It is open to the public from dawn until dusk.
