The family of an East Texas jail inmate say they are furious authorities did not tell them their loved one was hospitalized and placed on life support. Brown's family is praying for a miracle and wants answers on how it happened.
William Brown was taken from the Gregg County Jail, where he was being held on for theft, to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview on Saturday, where he remains on life support.
Family members say when 58-year-old Brown was taken from the Gregg County Jail to the hospital, doctors told them his body temperature was only 78 degrees.
"I didn't know anything about the hospital until Monday. When he arrived at Good Shepherd, he had a body temperature of 78 degrees, and they said they didn't see how he was living with a body temperature like that," says Ulysses Brown, a family member.
Brown's brother's claim no one contacted them when William was taken to intensive care.
"He had been up there 2 days before they notified us. And when I went up there he was in intensive care. The sheriff's office didn't call me at all, Good Shepherd Medical Center called. It hurt real bad, I didn't know what was going on," said Adel Brown.
In a statement from the Gregg County Sheriff's Department to KLTV, Sheriff Maxey Cerliano said William Brown was found in his bunk in what appeared to be urine. William was alert and responsive, but appeared to be having a medical issue. Jail staff provided him medical assistance and he was taken to the hospital after his vital signs were found to be outside of acceptable levels.
Sheriff Cerliano said that on December 16, 2013, a Magistrate's Order for Mental Health or Mental Retardation Examination on Brown was issued by Judge Arthur Fort. The order was for an examination by Community Healthcare within 30 days and was pending when the inmate was sent to the hospital. The inmate had a previous examination by Community Healthcore on August 20, 2013, while in jail. Also, on December 5, 2013 the inmate was released from the jail on Bond with Conditions to report to Community Healthcore for treatment. Brown was transported to Community Healthcore on that date by the Gregg County Sheriff's Office.
In accordance with policy, the sheriff said they did call the listed contact for Brown, but that contact was not any family member that we spoke with.
"He was in jail for his crime, we realize that, but he's still a human being, and we want him respected as a human being," Ulysses says.
Now all they can do is pray William survives.
"Ain't no guarantee he's going to live a normal life. What really happened?" says Adel.
