Carthage snatches 3A State Championship from Kilgore, 34-23

One thing was certain coming into Thursday, the 3A Division I high school football state championship was coming back to East Texas.  The only question was would it be to Carthage or Kilgore as the two teams battled at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Carthage was looking for its 4th state title since 2008.  Quarterback Blake Bogenschutz did his  best to make sure that happened after hooking up with Marquise Guinn on a 6-yard-pass to give a Carthage a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.  Kilgore struck back late in the first on a 1-yard-run by Kevrin Justice to tie the game at 7.  Carthage running back Terian Goree scored the first of his two touchdowns late in the second quarter as Carthage took a 14-10 lead in the locker room at halftime.

Bogenschutz got the second half scoring going on a 51-yard-pass to Okeeron Rutherford.  After Goree's second rushing score of the day, Carthage had a 28-10 lead.  Kilgore got the fourth quarter going with a 32-yard-run and score by Benny Colbert.  With 3:40 left in the game, Kilgore would get even closer on a 1-yard-run as Justice scored his second touchdown of the day to make it a 28-23 Carthage lead.  Kilgore failed on the two-point conversion to make it a 3 point game.

The Carthage offense closed the door on the comeback with a 24-yard-run by Tevin Pipkin which ended up in the endzone.  The extra point was no good but Carthage held on for the 34-23 win.  Pipkin rushed for 118 yards on 18 carries. Carthage finished with 264 yards on the ground.

Carthage quarterback Blake Bogenschutz was named the Outstanding Player of the Game after rushing for 100 yards and completing 8 of 18 passes for 185 yards with two touchdowns and an interception.

Kilgore's Kevrin Justice carried 21 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns in the losing effort.
