KSLA News 12 Editorial: Dec. 19th-TOPS for Grad Students

How do you get more college graduates to consider living and working in Louisiana?

State Representative Hunter Greene of Baton Rouge has one idea. Expand the TOPS Scholarship Program to help students who received their undergraduate degree outside of Louisiana to return to the state for their graduate degree.

All too often talented college graduates don't end up in Louisiana. Offering them TOPS scholarships for advanced degrees could be a way to bring their much needed skills to the state. The legislation is expected to be brought up next year.

I encourage our local delegation to consider supporting it.

I'm James Smith.

Tonight at 11:59 p.m., KSLA's extended agreement with DirecTV will expire and they may drop this station from their lineup. We have been working hard to stay on their system, but they have simply refused to make a fair deal.

As we all witness the devastation of Hurricane Harvey, we are reminded of the responsibility of local broadcasters to serve those in need. And we're pleased DirecTV understood the importance of our local commitment and accepted Raycom Media's extension.
