NSU women get 700th win in program history

Posted: Updated:

Defensive pressure that forced Arkansas-Monticello into 27 turnovers spurred the Northwestern State women's basketball team to a 63-40 win over the Cotton Blossoms to give the program its 700th victory Tuesday night in Prather Coliseum.

"It's nice to hit the milestone.  It's a tribute to all the coaches and players that came before us," said co-head coach Brooke Stoehr.  "We're just a small part of that.

"Hopefully we can add a lot more wins for the program," she said. "I'm just honored and proud to be a part of that. It's special to get it at home."

UAM (3-4) jumped out to an early lead with a 3-pointer from Jordan Goforth answered by a 3-ball from NSU's (5-4) Chelsea Rogers.   A 3-pointer from Nikki Mullen followed by a layup from Kourtney Pennywell gave UAM a one point lead when Mullen drained another long-ball.

NSU quickly called a timeout with 15:55 to play in the first half and switched to a full-court press. NSU went into the halftime break with a 33-26 lead and had forced the Cotton Blossoms into 13 turnovers.

"We just felt like we need to do something different," said Stoehr. "We felt like we needed something in our repertoire to force turnovers, create energy, and change tempo.  That was huge for us.

"I thought it got our excitement and energy going and created some easy baskets for us," she said. "I think it's something that we could really use to build."

The Lady Demons opened the second half with a 17-2 run in the first 12 minutes of the half.

Kourtney Pennywell (2), Janelle Perez (4) and Keisha Lee (4) led Northwestern State in scoring during that time.

Lee was the Lady Demons' leading scorer with 15 points followed by Pennywell (11) and Perez (10).  Jordan Goforth was the only Cotton Blossom in double-figures and had 17 points.

NSU outrebounded UAM 37-34, led by Chelsea Rogers who set a new career-high of 13 boards. No other Lady Demon had more than four.

"Chelsea just does the little things, and it goes unnoticed a lot," said Stoehr. "I was very proud of her energy and effort.  She hits opens shots, rebounds, and plays defense.

"She is just one of those glue players for us," she said.

Ten of the 27 forced turnovers by the Lady Demons were steals.  Beatrice Attura and Pennywell each had two steals.  NSU only turned the ball over 11 times.

Breonna O'Conner finished with seven points and played 11 minutes.

"The press was something that we thought could help her earn minutes. She bought into that and was very good in it," said Stoehr.

NSU will round out its non-conference season over the next two weeks starting at Texas on Friday at 7 o'clock.  After Texas, NSU will travel to San Antonio to face New Mexico State and North Dakota State in the UTSA Holiday Classic.

The Lady Demons will next take the floor in Prather Coliseum on Jan. 2 to open the Southland Conference Play.
