LSUS Lady Pilots win 5th straight, beating Lyon College

BATESVILLE, AR -

The LSU Shreveport Lady Pilots had three scorers reach double figures in route to their fifth consecutive win on Tuesday night over the Lyon College Scots 64-49. Byroneshia Santiago led the Lady Pilots with her second double-double of the season.

Santiago had the game high 18 points and season high 14 rebounds as the Lady Pilots pick up the non-conference road win.

"We got a good win tonight," said LSUS head coach Ronnie Howell after he guided his squad to their eighth win of the season.

The Lady Pilots started off the game stretching out to a 16 point lead but the Scots mounted a rally and brought the score to within nine by halftime.

After the Lady Pilots would open their lead back to double digits early on in the second half, the Scots regained the momentum and got to within two of the Lady Pilots with 10:56 to play in the game but LSUS would take the reins back and easing their way to a 15 point win.

"They made a good run to cut it to two but down the stretch we were able to make some plays to finish it off," Howell continued.

Tonight's game was pretty much even when it came to each team making 19 field goals; Lyon College making just four threes while the Lady Pilots made just six. The big difference in the game was that the Lady Pilots converted 20 of 26 free-throw attempts while the home team made just seven of 15 from the charity stripe.

Shanovia Gamblin tossed in 16 points for the Lady Pilots while Kiara Taylor found the groove beyond the arc sinking three of four to finish with a dozen points.

The rebounding battle fell slightly in the Lady Pilots favor 39-33. Carina Jackson led Lyon College with 15 points as she made three of their four from downtown.

One thing the Lady Pilots will need to minimize in the future was the fact that they turned the ball over 20 times tonight but they did manage 19 takeaways to offset somewhat their mistakes.

Coach Howell knows that tomorrow's game will require for fewer mistakes against a tough Shawnee State squad, "We'll have to play much better tomorrow to compete against a really good Shawnee State team."

Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Becknell Gymnasium on the campus of Lyon College.
